Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 21: Call it an irony or something else. Amid the serious dearth of basic infrastructure in government schools of Jammu and Kashmir, the Babus here are busy showcasing a different picture to Prime Minister Modi on his visit to the erstwhile state.
This is the tale of a neglected government school built in 1926. The fate of this dilapidated structure changed overnight with the entire administration at present busy overseeing its renovation. The school had neither tiles on the floor nor paved floors in the campus, but now everything has changed. It looks like a private school now.
This government school is right in front of the prime minister's rally venue. Masons are busy installing tiles in the school premises just in front of the gate. Painting is going on the walls. Some children are making artworks on the walls. All the teachers and the Chief Education Officer of the district are also present in the school. He is also busy in his work. The floor of every room of the school is gleaming with brilliant tiles. Even the toilet has been glazed with tiles. The Prime Minister is likely to visit the school upon his arrival in the parish. The entire school has been renovated and painted anew by the Education Department. Perhaps this will be the first school in the state, in which now there is no kutcha floor anywhere. Awareness messages have been written on the walls inside the school.
The people of the village wish PM Modi should hold rally in every village of the state so that the condition of every school should improve and children get an environment like private schools.
According to government data, there are more than 19,000 schools in Jammu region of the state that are functioning sans basic facilities.
Jammu and Kashmir has 232 such schools wherein toilet facility for children isn’t available and out of these 232 schools. 228 are located in Jammu region while as Kashmir has mere 4 such schools.
In the list of 10 states with poor electricity supply in schools. The Jammu and Kashmir ranks fourth.
The states topping the list include Bihar, with just 8.1% of schools having electricity, and Jharkhand (12.0 %) and Assam (15.9%). There are as many as 6000 schools in the state without electricity. The survey has also revealed that 75 percent of schools have no computer labs.
