Jammu, Jan 17: Serious differences have surfaced within the Congress over its relationship with the ruling National Conference (NC), with a faction of party leaders pressing for a more aggressive stance during the upcoming Budget Session of the Legislative Assembly. Sources said the group, reportedly aggrieved over being denied a “safe seat” during the recent Rajya Sabha elections, has been mounting pressure on the party leadership to shift from the role of a coalition partner to that of a strong opposition within the Assembly. The faction has been demanding that Congress MLAs should corner the NC government for what it terms as failure to fulfil several promises made to the people. According to party insiders, the group is advocating a tougher posture on governance issues, public grievances, and unimplemented commitments, arguing that continued restraint could weaken the party’s independent political identity. However, another section within the Congress holds a contrasting view, stressing the need to maintain cordial ties with the NC to present a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the forthcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and Panchayat elections. This group believes that electoral coordination with the ruling party is crucial to counter the BJP’s organisational strength at the grassroots level and that public confrontation in the Assembly could strain the alliance and hurt prospects in local body polls. The emerging divide has placed the party leadership in a delicate position as it seeks to balance alliance compulsions with internal demands for a more assertive political posture. With the Budget Session approaching and local elections on the horizon, how the Congress navigates this internal disagreement is expected to shape its strategy in the months ahead. Notable, budget session of the Legislative Assembly is going to commence from February 2. |
