srinagar, May 15: Contrary to the claims of previous government about empowerment of women in the state, details reveal that the Omar Abdullah-led regime was least bothered about the hardships faced by women and measures to tackle the crises on ground.
The much hyped Women Entrepreneurship Program (WEP) was launched in March 2010 by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to "address the woes of women in the state who continue to bear the worst brunt during the past decades."
Omar had also announced that at least 50 thousand jobs would be given to the needy women of the state.
Due to Omar's apparently non-serious approach to give jobs to 50 thousand women, the scheme could not fulfil even 10 percent of the requirement, hence leaving the destitute in the lurch once again.
Sources told Early Times that such was the casual approach of Omar that there were no guidelines issued for WEP and hence it met the same fate like several other government run programs.
The WEP was conceived to provide direct loan facility up to Rs 3 lakh at a a low interest rate of 6 percent to the applicants within the age group of 18 to 45 years with minimum required qualification of Matriculate for specified trades. The scheme was funded by the Social Welfare department up to 2011-12 and thereafter by the Labour and Employment department.
But against the target of 50 thousand jobs the scheme could generate around four thousand jobs only. Also, financial management of the scheme was found deficient. An amount of Rs 6.50 crore was released, which however remained unspent and no guidelines of the scheme were issued.
Now when NC and Congress both sit in opposition and castigate the state government over its non- serious approach in addressing the unemployment crises, both the parties must be held accountable for what they have done during their regime for the jobless youth.
