Kashmir on brink of communication breakdown? | Grenade attack on mobile tower in Srinagar | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 1: As the fresh spate of attacks on telecom towers are sending shock waves across the Kashmir valley, it's estimated that more than 80 percent people will lose access to communication while thousands would be rendered jobless. The recent threats by militants and attacks on cellular towers in north Kashmir and Srinagar has not only compelled the security agencies to remain on tenterhooks but has also put masses in a fix. As per latest data, Srinagar is highest in the state in terms of internet usage, with more than 21532 broadband internet connections operational. Also, 75 percent people in Srinagar use internet on their mobile phones. The data reveals that more than 80 percent of households own a phone, wireline and wireless taken together. And all of a sudden snapping of communications would not only lead Valley to the medieval times but will also make the situation more turbulent and chaotic. The land owners who earlier had allowed cellular companies to erect towers inside their properties are now urging the companies to remove them. Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh is one of the land owners who had rented his lawn for the mobile tower in Srinagar. Sheikh is urging the company to dismantle the tower. "Life is precious than money," he said. The vendors doing the recharge business are gradually closing down their shops, denying the recharge facility to their customers. One of the vendors said while pleading anonymity that he has almost planned to switch to some other business and not to remain associated with the cellular world any more. He says the threat perception is taking toll and no one would want to invite trouble for himself. An unknown militant group had killed one person and injured two others while attacking mobile outlet in north Kashmir's Sopore area some days ago. Posters surfacing in various areas in Valley have warned the cellular companies to wind up their operations has also scared people at large and particularly the ones associated with the telecommunication business. Meanwhile, unidentified persons hurled a grenade on a mobile transmission tower in Habba Kadal area of old city on Monday, causing panic in the area. Reports said the grenade was lobbed at the compound, owned by one Abdul Ahad at Gadood Bagh in Habba Kadal which houses two mobile towers. The attack, first of its kind in the Srinagar city, happened around noon in which a civilian Imtiyaz Ahmad sustained injuries. |
