In the name of friendship, Coalition members take state chopper for a `ride'
6/2/2015 12:28:18 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 1: Nobody denies that the persons involved in a coalition must have strong social bonds as well. But these bonds need should not be strengthened by punching holes in the state exchequer. The persons desirous of such bondage must spend out of their own pocket.
Jammu Kashmir is cash starved state. Even salaries of employees and contractor's bills are managed by doing adjustments here and there. The state, therefore, cannot afford such luxuries. The state machinery cannot b misused even by the ministers and bureaucrats. According to law of the land, it is not allowed and cannot be justified.
The former Presdent of India, Pratiba Patil took her relatives to South Africa. Her foreign trips cost the country around 205 Crores. The country did not allow it. The president was in news and people across the political and social spectrum criticized her for taking the country for a ride.
Interestingly the politicians who travelled by the state chopper to kishtwar to attend a marriage used to criticize former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah for misusing the chopper. Attending a private function is not a constitutional duty and, therefore, the state machinery cannot be used, rather misused for the purpose. The irony is that the deputy chief minister's wife who by no means is entitled to travel by the state chopper was among the elite who made it to kishtwar by the chopper.
Incidentally most of the persons who misused the state chopper are moneyed people and must be made to pay for the ride. The Chief Minister must recover the amount and deposit it in the state treasury and publish the receipt in local dailies.
