MLA Dooru leaves lactating mothers high and dry

Anantnag, June 8: In order to gain political mileage out of centrally sponsored scheme meant for women who deliver in government hospitals, MLA Dooru Monday organized a function for distribution of cheques among such women, however most of them returned disappointed without receiving any cheques.
Under Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY), sponsored by Ministry of Women and Child Development Government of India, pregnant and lactating women of19 years of age and older receive conditional Maternity Benefit of Rs 6000 from the Scheme in two instalments for first two births. Scheme was launched only in Khutwa and Anatnag districts by the previous NC-Congress collation government.
Reports said that Social welfare Department organized a function on the direction of MLA Dooru Syed Farooq Indrabi at Verinag and hundreds of lactating mothers attended the function for receiving monetary benefit.
They said that mothers of the area where informed by the department through Aaganwadi workers and asked to attend the function where-in they will receive cheques from the lawmaker, however in the function legislator distributed only ten cheques that irked others resulting chaos.
"Hundreds of women along with their new born babies attended the function but after speeches and sermons by the MLA only ten beneficiaries were given the cheques," a middle rung officer confirmed to Early Times. He said that it surprised one and all present in the function but angered lactating mothers who travelled to several kilometres to reach the venue.
"Women from Kapran and other far off areas attended the function for receiving the monetary benefit which is otherwise sent to their accounts through online system," He added.
Eyewitness said that agitated women expressed their anguish by crying and hooting. "For what purpose then you brought us here, these cruel people forced us to remain hungry for the whole day," a group was spotted saying. The onlookers said that aimed chaos MLA Dooru left the function.
A senior official pleading anonymity said that there was no need of organizing such a function.
"This scheme has already a procedure where-in the monetary help is being transferred to the bank account of beneficiary as cheque system developed many problems," he said.
Meanwhile, Dooru residents told Early Times that MLA was fallowing the footprints of previous government which were unacceptable to them.
