Udhampur, June 8: Residents of Garhi area of Udhampur Monday blocked Jammu-Srinagar highway for more than four hours and held a strong protest, alleging forcible occupation of the temple land by some people.
Expressing deep concern and anguish over the "forcible occupation" of temple land in Garhi area of Udhampur by some people, locals today blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway for more than four hours, disrupting vehicular movement and raising anti-administration slogans.
They warned the district administration and government of serious consequences if it fails to fulfill its legal duty of protecting the temple land.
Satish Sethi, a Garhi resident, alleged that a few days ago a few people forcibly constructed a tin shed on temple land near the temple well. The locals later dismantled the shed, demanding action against the culprits. The administration had promised to sort out the matter within one week but till date nothing has been done, he added.
"Everyone knows that it is the temple land for years some people had all of a sudden tried to grab it," he said and threatened to intensify the agitation if the authorities failed to get the land vacated.
The BJP state secretary Pawan Khajuria also showed his concern over the illegal occupation of temple land and demanded stern action against those involved in the illegal act.
He said the authorities were themselves creating problems by not taking action against the land grabbers.
Udhampur tehsildar Amir Choudhary and SHO, Rehmbal police station, later reached the spot and pacified the protesters and assured them the matter would be sorted out soon after which the protesters lifted their dharna and dispersed off peacefully.
