Sagar terms BJP-PDP regime as communal but forgets NC's dubious role in Amarnath land row
Omar too had defended anti-Amarnath land transfer agitation

Early Times Report

JAMMU, June 8: NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar today criticised BJP-PDP coalition government for "disrupting communal harmony" in the state, forgetting that his government had defended the 2008 anti-Amarnath land transfer agitation, ultimately leading to the division of people in the name of religion and region. There was a proposal for acquiring land in Kashmir to raise temporary shelters for the Amarnath pilgrims, who visit the state from different parts of the country and abroad, but it was opposed tooth and nail by the separatists who unfortunately are given so much of weightage in the state politics by the otherwise mainstream leaders. Instead of showing these separatists their place and taking steps to book them under the law of the land for their anti-national and pro-Pakistan activities, almost every Valley politician had in 2008 joined them to oppose the transfer of land to Amarnath shrine board as if it was a board of non-state subjects. The board and all its members belong to J&K. The valley leaders then failed to convince those to who opposed the transfer of land to the board that if no one has ever opposed them in raising properties in Jammu and elsewhere in the country, they should also not raise a hue and cry over the board's move. But none of them did not do so. They instead added fuel to the fire by joining the anti-India forces in the valley which had then led to the division of people in the name of religion and region. Sagar also said that the present regime was trying to disrupt the communal harmony in the state which was well-preserved for decades. Not only Sagar but other NC leaders too talk of communal harmony only in Jammu. In Valley, such words seem to have lost their relevance after the mass exodus of Kashmiri Hindus due to the fear of militants. NC's role was not appreciable during the Amarnath land row also when, like other Valley leaders, it too had opposed the construction of temporary shelters for pilgrims. Till the Amarnath land row, NC had the distinction of never playing with the secessionist sentiments of people in Kashmir.
Jammuites had felt sorry the way Omar Abdullah, then MP, had defended the anti-Amarnath land transfer agitation in the parliament. And hats off to him for having presented it to be a "secular" agitation for the land. Let him tell the nation who was going to take away the land from him. Had an outside agency been allotted the land to settle down its "communal brigade" there? It was just a temporary transfer to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board to facilitate the pilgrimage of lakhs of pilgrims coming from across the country and abroad. And, is the Shrine Board an outside agency? The fact of the matter is that Omar too had joined the course of competitive communalism that was initiated by his political rivals and hijacked by the communal secessionists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
So, before labelling the present regime as communal, NC veteran Sagar needs to have a cursory look at the past happenings to know about his party's 'condemnable" role in more serious situations.
