Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 24: The unrest that broke out in Kashmir valley in July this year has led to a situation where groups of people are at loggerheads as whether to continue with the shutdown or to say goodbye to the same.
Reports coming from different districts of Kashmir say that there is a division of opinion among the people with regard to the continuance of shutdown or otherwise. While most of the people want the shutdown to end there are some people who want the shutdown to continue.
Division of opinion among the people has led to a 'civil' war in the valley with clashes taking place between supporters and detractors of the 'strike calendar' of the separatists. Over the past few weeks some disturbing incidents have taken place. It has been observed that masked youth have been attacking people who wish to carry on with daily chores of life.
The masked youth have been pelting stones on the people as well as vehicles in the different areas of Kashmir valley. Some injuries have already taken place and scores of vehicles have been damaged in such incidents. The agitators also put some auto-rickshaws on fire and this led to disillusionment among the masses.
Majority of the people in Kashmir want normalcy to return so that they carry out with their normal activities as they had been doing before the unrest broke out. Fearing reprisal from different quarters the common masses are not able to speak out. The people as such are adopting wait and watch policy hoping that the shutdown would come to an end soon.
People in general are unhappy over the attacks being carried by the masked youth on the masses who wish normalcy to return. Clashes between groups of people are being viewed as disturbing by the masses and they refer to same as a danger for the future. People as a general believe that outbreak of civil war in Kashmir is dangerous for the future for the place which is known as 'Paradise on Earth'.
The recent incidents have dealt a blow to the Kashmiri society which is known as tolerant society. Continuous shutdown has led to a situation where people tend to lose their temper as and when they are up against some extraordinary development. In this manner there are some people who are ready to cause harm to others and same has been proved by the attacks carried out by masked youth on people as well as vehicles.
Torching of schools in different parts of Kashmir is yet another example of changing, but disturbing scenario that has of late emerged in the valley. In the past Kashmiris would never think of causing harm to public utilities, but as on date there are elements in Kashmiri society who are out to damage schools and other public places.
It would be in place to mention here that Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces. The street protests that followed Burhan's killing led to death of more than 90 civilians and since shutdown has been going on across Kashmir.
