Early Times Report

Banihal, Nov 24: A PDD casual worker was burnt alive while working on a HT electric line at Darshipora here today, sparking off protests by locals who alleged that the incident had occurred due to the negligence of the department.
Mohammad Saleem, son of Abdul Rasheed Sheikh, was working on a transformer linked to a HT wire during the scheduled curtailment of power in the area. However, while he was still busy in his work, the electricity came unexpectedly, resulting in his instant death.
His burnt body kept hanging from the pole till late this evening. As mark of protest against the incident, locals closed the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, shouting slogans against PDD. They were demanding compensation to the victim's family and action against those who had switched on the light during the curtailment period.
Some other PDD workers were also said to be working with Saleem when the incident took place, but all of them fled the spot soon after he was electrocuted, locals said.
The protesters also demanded registration of FIR against the department. Banihal SDM, tehsildar and senior police officers rushed to the spot, but all their efforts to pacify the protesters failed. They said such incidents had happened in Banihal areas in the past too, but the victims' families were still struggling for justice.
Eyewitnesses said the casual worker was burnt alive on the pole and it was a shocking incident. When contacted, PDD AEE, Banihal, Fayaz Ahmed said that he was on way to the spot to apprise himself of the ground situation.
Meanwhile District Development Commissioner (DDC) Ramban has ordered Magisterial probe into the incident and announced Rs one Lakh as compensation to the next kin of the deceased. Senior officers of the department also have assured job to his wife in the department.
Following the announcement of job and ex-gratia, the protestors lifted their five hours long protest and the normal traffic was restored at 8:30 pm. Later police after legal formalities handed over the body of deceased to his family for last rights.
