Sports Reporter
JAMMU, Apr 3: Happened for the first time in the history of sports in University of Jammu (JU), the institution of higher learning has not been able to hold this year's annual athletics meet and valedictory function of the inter-college competitions on the campus. The athletics meet as also a couple of events in other disciplines, including the cricket tournament, could not be held by the Department of Sports and Physical Education in view of worst condition of the playing fields aftermath the Indian Science Congress.
Even the Vice Chancellor, Prof MPS Ishar, a sports enthusiast and former Dean of the sports rich, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar, seems helpless in his endeavor to hold the important event.
"Since the undergraduate examinations are underway and the managements of most of the participating colleges expressed their inability to raise the teams, we have left with little options. Still, efforts are underway to conduct the athletics meet," Director Sports, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau said.
The hosting of Indian Science Congress caused most of the damage to the sports infrastructure on the campus and unfortunately nothing has been done to repair the playing fields till date by the authorities concerned.
"Lack of interest shown by the authorities towards sports speaks about the insensitive system. You cannot expect miracles from the athletes when the institutions like JU have failed to hold the important events," expressing his concern a retired coach of JU said.

New or old, India''s Ashwin ready to play ball

Agency
MIRPUR, Apr 3: India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes he has entered that phase of his career when he can skip practice and does not care if the ball in his hand is old or new.
Ashwin shared the new ball in two of India`s four successive victories, claiming man-of-the-match awards against Bangladesh and Australia.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni may once again toss the new ball to the 27-year-old spinner in Friday`s semi-final against South Africa and Ashwin said he was ready to play the role he often does for the Chennai team that Dhoni leads in the Indian Premier League.
"I`ve been playing alongside Mahi (Dhoni) for some time, and he probably knows where to use me and where not to use me. I`m always open to bowling in any situation, so for me it doesn`t make any difference," Ashwin told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.
"In the last two or three months, I feel that I`m probably at the top of my bowling game. When I reach that phase, I pretty much don`t practise at all.
"That`s a phase I`m in right now. The ball is landing exactly where I want it."
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra has also been in superb form but Ashwin reckons South Africa will harness left-arm tweaker Aaron Phangiso with leggie Imran Tahir -- the tournament`s second highest wicket-taker -- in an attempt to cancel out India`s spin advantage.
"Imran Tahir has been in top form and I expect Phangiso to play. When that happens, you`re pretty much evened out on the number of spinners both teams will play. It comes down to how well your spinners handle it."
South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis would not reveal whether Phangiso will play in the semi-final.
"That decision we will make tomorrow ... we will assess how the wicket is playing and if it helps spin, we will definitely look at that option."
In a tournament where spin bowling has made or marred the fate of many teams, South Africa`s Wednesday practice had a surprise guest in Shane Warne. Du Plessis denied the team had sought advice from the retired Australian.
"It wasn`t our decision. It was just I think Warne`s decision," Du Plessis said.
"He thought he wanted to come and bowl a bit and bowl a few balls to us. Obviously, it was nice to have him around as he has been such a fantastic bowler.
"I wasn`t there when he was speaking with Tahir. But Imran has met him before. Obviously they both have played for Hampshire.
"They have worked together in the past and I did ask him what he said. He just said `you`ve been bowling well and keep up the good work`."

IOA forms ad-hoc panel to run boxing

Agency
New Delhi, Apr 3: To ensure that boxers and coaches remain affected by the Federation`s international termination and derecognition at home, the IOA on Thursday formed an ad-hoc Committee to handle issues related to coaching and selection in the beleaguered sport.
The first Executive Council meeting of the IOA was held on Thursday, after the lifting of suspension by the IOC, under the chairmanship of N Ramachandran.
Ramachandran said the IOA decided to form an ad-hoc committee so that the Indian boxers and coaches` participation in the international events was not hampered. The move was necessitated by the IABF`s termination by the International Boxing Association and de-recognition by the Sports Ministry here.
"The IOA has formed an Ad-hoc Committee, consisting of six members under the chairmanship of Tarlochan Singh, who has years of experience in Olympic movement. The national coach - G S Sandhu and India`s representative at the International Boxing Association (AIBA), Kishan Narsi are also in the committee," said Ramachandran.
"The committee has been approved by the AIBA and it will be handling all issues like coaching, selection, etc. Since we do not want the boxers to suffer we have formed this committee," he said.
Asked who will fund the Indian boxers, Ramachandran replied, "The boxers have to be funded by the government of India. If the Government does not fund them, then the IOA will take a call. But as per natural process, any athlete who aspires to go abroad and train, the government funds him/her."
Ramachandran said as soon as AIBA recognises the IABF, the IOA will give it recognition.
"Whenever IABF forms a body, it will apply to the IOA for recognition and as per the Olympic Charter, we will have to give recognition. But that is some time away. AIBA`s recognition has to come first," he explained.
Ramachandran also said he had a fruitful meeting with the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach at Lausanne, besides having another discussing important issues with President of OCA Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah Al-Fahad at Kuwait.
