Commission verifying several complaints including Sakina's religious coercion
ECI takes stock of election preparations in J&K

JAMMU, Apr 3: Chief Election Commissioner of India Veeravalli Sundaram Sampath has said that team of Election Commission of India is fully prepared for conducting free and fair polls in the biggest democracy of the world. He also downplayed the threat of poll boycott call given by the separatist and said that the poll boycott call given by separatist is not a new thing in State of Jammu and Kashmir and added that commission has taken all measures to ensure free and fair polls in the state.
Accompanied by Vinod Zutshi Deputy Election Commissioner, Dr. Nasim Zaidi, Election Commissioner and Umang Narula Chief Electoral Officer J&K, Sampath on the question of Sonia Gandhi meeting with Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Chief Cleric of Jamia Masjid Delhi in a bid to garner Muslim votes for Congress party during elections, said that the commission hasn't received any complaint so far.
In another question on delaying permission to Modi's chopper to take off few days ago, Sampath said that the commission after receiving complaint from the BJP had sought detailed report from the Civil Aviation Ministry and added that once the commission received the report from the Ministry, the same will be accordingly looked into.
In a question on complaint lodged by JKNPP Supremo Prof. Bhim Singh on misuse of official machinery by the Government in power, the ECI said that the complaint is being looked into and assured that necessary action will be initiated in case anyone was found guilty of misusing the official machinery.
Sampath said that during his meeting with various political parties, some political complaints about various issues, particularly from smaller parties were received and added that same are being looked into. He said that the issue of Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo invoking religious sentiments has also come to the notice of the Commission and said that the issue is being looked into.
He said that many complaints about ignoring violations of Model Code of Conduct have also been received by the Commission and said that everything has been put in place to address the issue. He said that it came to the notice of the Commission that due to heavy rains and snowfalls, the roads leading to polling station were badly damaged. He said that the directions has been passed to the concerned agencies for immediate repair of roads leading to polling station on war footing so that voting could be felicitated smoothly.
Commission has decided to increase the voting by two hours from 7 AM to 6 PM.
Later, responding to "Early Times" query regarding the allegations of various parties that Election authorities are being influenced by the ruling parties to get electoral benefits in their favour, CEC denied having received any complaints in this direction. He said that the election system in place is full proof and there is no possibility of such abbe rations to happen from any quarter. To another question if there was any any proposal with "Election Commissioner of India" to raise a separate cadre fully controlled and managed by the ECI, Mr. Sampath replied in negative adding in the same breath that all the officials engaged by the commission during elections were on deputation to the commission and the same was fully managed by the commission.
