Eye on 'favours', officials on verge of retirement extend support in campaign | Will authorities take cognizance of their absence from duties.....? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 3: Reiterating its resolve to ensure free and fair polls, Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampat today said the Commission would look into all complaints and cases which reflected violation of Model Code of Conduct in the state. As many such complaints stand registered formally, no cognizance has been taken of what can be seen as newest trend in poll campaign led by most of the Ministers in coalition Government- joining of a number of officials from Civil Secretariat in the campaign in support of candidates of alliance partners in both the regions in their respective areas. Sources said that Ministers staying away from their offices in the civil secretariat for a long time is a thing of past and something which doesn't amount to direct violation of MCC. However, what is becoming increasingly conspicuous is the absence of some officials at different levels from their offices. They have not taken any proper leave nor any permission for staying away from work and no one is actually taking serious note of their absence, in some cases for days together, said the sources. A common factor with these employees is that they are nearing their superannuation from services, a few of them less than a year left for retirement. Sources said while some have blessings of political bosses in many ways which makes them feel fearless in abandoning their work to support ruling parties in ongoing campaign, some are doing it to please their political bosses so that they can later accrue benefits and favours later in terms of seeking extension in services or reemployment against any suitable posts, trend which though, is not uncommon or new to present coalition regime. These employees are offering their 'services' by way of utilizing their influence in respective areas where they hail from in wooing electorate to vote in support of alliance candidates be it in Jammu or across Valley, said the sources adding that some on verge of retirement are only doing this to keep their political bosses in good humour and help them in every possible manner. However, a couple of officers nearing retirement are also seeking a good 'opening' in the political arena as they intend to join parties anytime soon after LS polls, sources said further. While this is not something unprecedented a development to be seen, what may assume a precedent in time to come is absence of officials from their duties for a long period. What raises questions is the fact why administrative authorities are not taking look into the matter which has become a talking point in the corridors of Secretariat these days. Will the Chief Secretary take a look of the attendance roaster to see continuous absence of employees from officers ... or will the election authorities take cognizance of the matter as violation of MCC...? |
