Despite allocation of funds 5 years back, Food Craft Institute stays in oblivion

Jammu, Apr 3: Despite liberal funding from center government on various schemes in connection with providing training to the youth of the state to explore employments in hospitality sector, state government has failed to construct Food Craft Institute (FCI) for a period of more than five years due to delay in acquisition of land on various occasions.
Sources told Early Times that in order to meet the problem of trained manpower gap in the hospitality sector due to its growing demand, two schemes viz the 'Assistance to Food Craft Institute' and 'Capacity Building for Service Providers' were launched in January 2008 by the Gol.
"Center government had sanctioned proposal of the Director Tourism Jammu for establishment of the Food Craft Institute at Bhagwati Nagar Jammu at a cost of Rs 4.83 crore and funds amounting to Rs 2 crore were released in 2008 for this purpose," they said.
They further said that owing to lack of decision about the site of establishment of the Institute due to problems in acquisition of land at two identified sites viz., Bhagwati Nagar Jammu and Dhummi-Akhnoor, the Institute had not been established.
But later State Government transferred State land at Dammi Nagrota in December 2012 for construction of the Institute. The Department was organizing short term courses of six to eight week duration in housekeeping and food production from the make shift arrangement at Bhagwati Nagar Jammu for which Rs 27.50 lakh had been released out of funds received from the Gol, they said.
Thus, delay in acquisition of land and non-sanction of manpower had resulted in non-establishment of the Craft Institute for a period of more than five years which not only deprived the youth to upgrade hospitality skills and employment opportunities but also non-utilisation of balance funds of Rs 1.73 crore and non-availing of balance assistance of Rs 2.83 crore from Gol for a period of more than five years.
The main objective of the scheme was to create and upgrade adequate institutional infrastructure for training and certification of manpower resources by conducting short duration courses covering food and beverage, food production, house-keeping etc under Hunar-se- Rozgar, hospitality trainer programme, training of teachers, earn while you learn," they said.
