| Civil society, people of Doda, Kishtwar up in arms against GREF | | Iissue of GREF substandard work | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Jammu Apr 3: In response to the news item published in "Early Times" titled as "GREF fails people, retention walls at Pul Doda collapse--- 40 Cr go down the drain" published in 2-4-2014 edition of the newspaper, the general public and various representatives of Civil Society in Doda, Kishtwar and Bhaderwah are up in arms against the central agency General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) responsible for maintaining 110 KM Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway and 35 KM Doda-Bhaderwah road for using sub standard material in road construction, beside for their failure in making a comprehensive plan to tackle with the issue of continuous road blockade on these two important road stretches connecting the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar having population of over 7 lakh souls with the rest of the state.At Kishtwar the protest was held by Public Awareness Front Kishtwar at Dak Banglow Chowk blaming the GRFF authorities for worst condition of roads in entire Doda region. President of the front Shakir Siddiqui while talking to "Early Times" said that the work executed by the GREF needs to be looked into seriously, particularly with respect to the use of sub standard material in construction work by the authorities and seek a detail and independent probe against this central agency. He said that the GREF not only use sub-standard material on Batote-Kishtwar, but also on 60 KM Kishtwar-Padder and on 85 KM Kishtwar-Sinthan roads.
He said that due to GREF anarchy, several innocent people lost precious lives in accidents on these roads. He also demanded immediate restoration of Kishtwar-Sinthan on war footing bases. At Bhaderwah the protest was held under the banner of Bhaderwah Youth Development Action Committee led by its President Naseer Mehboob and took the authorities to task for not repairing the two important roads.
The People of Bhaderwah especially youth of the area today assembled in Sari Bazaar Bhaderwah and held protest demonstration against the GREF authorities.
"Entire roads were in worst condition, road surface stands broken at many places causes lot of inconvenience to the people traveling on these roads," said the agitators.
They said that the journey on Doda region roads is time consuming, beside also poses great threat to the fitnesses of the vehicles playing on these roads. Similar protest were held at Doda wherein large number of people hailing from different walks of life held a protest against GREF authorities for their failure to maintain the quality work despite being warned from time to time. The agitators said that despite bring the matter into the notice of higher authorities of the District, state and GREF authorities, nothing was done on ground which indicates that all were hand in glove and shielding the corrupt officials.
The people of Doda region has issued an ultimatum to GREF authorities to either improve the quality of work and maintain the road surface, or be ready to face the public wrath.
It is pertinent to mention here that due to sub standard work and heavy landslide, the road link to Doda and Kishtwar mostly remains cut off from rest part of the state, beside the hanging rocks and stones also pose threat to human life and property. |
