Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 9: The State unit of Congress is bracing up for show down with the National Conference. An indication of it was given in the meeting chaired by Pradesh Congress Committee president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz at a meeting in Srinagar.
Soz directed his party members to gear up activities in the Kashmir zone. It's significant as the state unit was not happy with the decision of the party high command not to contest from the Kashmir division. The state unit felt that it damaged the poll prospects of the party which was viewing the Parliamentary elections preparation for run up to the crucial state elections.
The meeting according to the sources also analysed the ground report of party workers and supporters and voters not responding well the alliance candidate in the Valley and also the reports of the poll boycott calls and the intimidation of the voters.
"The meeting was unanimous that it would not be politically wise for the party to go ahead with any kind of alliance with the NC in the state elections. The PCC president had said that he will make Cong high command to concede to the demand of state unit leadership to go alone in elections," said a senior Congress leader.
The party feels that going by the ground reports the NC could suffer serious reverse and allying with it could prove suicidal to the party.
The Congress also feels that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had done damage to the party in Jammu by making very strong and critical statements against BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
"Omar knew that even Congress voters have some feeling for Modi. In such surcharged atmosphere he should have avoided any reference to Modi and concentrated on development done by Congress, which had done good for Jammu. But he deliberated used abusive language against Modi with the sole aim of strengthening BJP and weakening Congress which is very serious double-crossing by him and can't be tolerated," said a senior Congress leader.
