Omar Govt's total surrender in Sopore | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 9: For a change, almost all the Valley-based newspapers have prominently carried the stories of the physical and mental torture suffered by the voters of Kupwara and Uri areas at the hands of the masked and unmasked hooligans in the separatist hubs of Sopore and Baramulla. That the situation was deteriorating to a sort of the civil war between the lowest turnout Kupwara-Baramulla and the highest turnout Kupwara-Handwara-Uri belt was evident from the fact that hundreds of travelers from the north Kashmir border belts were assaulted and humiliated. Scores of Kupwara-bound buses, taxis and private cars, as also those coming in from Kupwara and Handwara, were damaged by the stone pelting groups. In retaliation, traders and residents of Kupwara and Handwara have reportedly harassed Sopore-based shopkeepers and warned them of serious consequences of the confrontation if the attacks on traffic continued on Saturday. This is what prompted the Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani to issue a call for truce and détente between the warring groups. Mr Geelani addressed a gathering of his supporters on dharna at Baramulla Chowk by telephone. He called such stone pelting attacks as "unIslamic" and made a passionate appeal to the parties to stop attacking each other. While it remains to be seen how the residents of the twin towns behave on Saturday and thereafter, it was clear that nobody from Omar Abdullah's government, Police or security forces came to the rescue of the much-harassed voters who made frantic calls of intervention to the authorities. The boycott hooligans kept continuing attacks on the passenger vehicles as well as the private cars of the daily commuters. Pathetic pictures of the men stripped naked and beaten up ruthlessly by the hooligans were published in the vernacular press. Most of the harassed and humiliated voters have leveled allegations that the Police and the civil administration watched the harassment like mute spectators. They SPs and DCs of the two districts, besides the DIG, did not take any calls from the harassed voters as they claimed to be "busy". This way, the Police and the Civil Administration forfeited their authority to the militants and the stone pelters. At the end of the day, J&K police filed FIRs against a group of the demonstrators in Baramulla and Sopore. It claimed in a press release that the miscreants had been identified and efforts were underway to arrest them. However, reports on Friday said that only the parents and other relatives of the wanted hooligans had been put behind the bars. Residents said that the real trouble mongers were at large despite their preparations for the next round of attacks tomorrow. |
