Pandits to approach court, DC assures protection
Mafia continues to eat into temple lands

SRINAGAR, June 30: Much to the shock of Kashmiri Pandits, days after they started construction of a temple at Shopian, District administration today while showing 'status quo order' of an unknown petitioner asked agitating Pandits to stop work on the temple land and informed them about the claim of property rights by the said petitioner.
Dozens of migrant Kashmiri Pandits who today staged protest demonstrations at Hergam area of Shopian after District administration stopped the construction of a temple on a piece of land which as per agitating Pandits has been illegally sold by Land Mafia and are claiming property rights over the temple land.
"We were asked to stop work and were informed that one unknown person who claimed property rights had fraudulently transferred the Temple land of Shopian on his name and had sold the same land to some party, we have revenue records, we have witness including locals who know that a temple was here and it is not personal property on any person," said V.S Lahori, president temples and religious places, District Shopian over Phone
According to the details, dozens of local Pandits intended to construct temple on the said land after reaching the spot started cleaning the area and informed the District administration about their plan to reconstruct temple on the spot according to one agitating Pandit namely Lachman Singh only after completing the formal documentation process which includes demarcation of land by executive officer Municipal Committee shopian on 16 June,2014.
"Two days back and today also when we started the construction work again, the concerned municipal committee officials came with a 'status quo' order of that unknown petitioner and asked to stop the work despite the fact that it was temple land and documents made were fake," said P.K Kaul, treasurer district temples shopian
According to VS Lahori this unknown petitioner is actually one Chander Mohan who was the last custodian of the temple and was an associate of Roopmani Das, a Pujari who looked after the temple decades ago and now with the help of land Mafias has managed to made fake documents .
Agitating Pandits namely Jawahar Lal Kandahari, Ravinder Singh, Chain Singh, Bansilal Razdan, T.S Jamwal and others who met Deputy Commissioner Shopian informed him that he should implement one High Court order passed in 2012 in favour of a group Kashmiri Pandits in which then Divisional commissioner Kashmir was directed to make an inventory of all temples along with the survey and khasra numbers etc. and Deputy commissioner after listening to the agitating Pandits assured them all help and protection to the temple land.
