Another Mader-e-Meharbaan anniversary goes un-noticed NC, Sheikh family losing sheen fast 7/15/2014 12:08:05 AM Early Times Report JAMMU, July 14: National Conference and the Sheikh Family are losing their importance in Kashmir. This was proved yet again on July 11 when yet another death anniversary of Begum Akber Jehan popularly known as Mader-e-Meharbaan went un-noticed. The National Conference, some seniors members of the organization believe, cannot escape responsibility for fading popularity of the Sheikh family and the organization as well. "This is not good for the party. If Sheikh family loses its importance, the party cannot survive", they said. The apprehensions of the senior members are not totally unfounded. The National Conference has been losing ground in Kashmir valley especially in South Kashmir since 2002. The organization has not done well in Jammu and Ladakh during the past elections. Recently it suffered a humiliating defeat in the Parliamentary elections. Senior leaders including Dr Farooq Abdullah lost the elections. When Sher-e-Kashmir passed away around one million people participated in his funeral. At least five persons got killed in stampedes at various places enroute the final abode of the `beloved' leader at Hazratbal. Kashmiris were in shock. They mourned the death for several days and life came to a standstill in the Valley. On July 11, a few people attended Mader-e-Meharbaan’s death anniversary. On July 11 the scene was no different at the Hazratbal graveyard. A few persons were seen reciting verses from Quran. Some National Conference workers also arrived to pay tributes to the memory of the lady who they believe stood by Sher-e-Kashmir through thick and thin. The organization has to wake up now, believe the seniors.
