Syed Tahir Bukhari

BARAMULLA, July 18 : Although Tangmarg area in district Baramulla in north Kashmir is known for overwhelming water resources but due to alleged apathy of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, the residents here are suffering immensely due to shortage of drinking water.
According to the residents of Khaipora, Shirpora, Babareshi, Hayatpora, Ferozpora and people of other adjoining areas have complained of severe shortage of drinking water from past few days.
Shabir Ahmad of Khaipora complained and said that,"The consumption of contaminated water has led to the outbreak of water-borne diseases like Cholera and gastroenteritis in the villages and authorities are doing nothing to address the problem. In absence of shortage of tap water, we are forced to walk miles to fetch water from open nallahs,"
Another local Mushtaq Ahmad Najar said that the taps are dry for past few days and despite repeated pleas, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Tangmarag division has failed to restore water supply to the villages.
Locals said that many people in these villages are suffering from cholera and gastroenteritis due to the consumption of contaminated water.
We will stage protests against the department if the supply was not restored at the earliest Mushtaq said.
The inhabitants of Kunzar area too have complained of shortage of water during Iftaar and Sehri time. Amidst scorching heat wave, inhabitants particularly women are left with no option but to fetch water from distant springs and streams. The locals appealed the concerned MLA Ghulam Hassan Mir to use his influence and restore water supply to the villages. An official from PHE Division Tangmarag said that, in view of shortage of potable drinking water, the supply would be made in shifts. "Nowadays we face water shortage generally because of low water quantity from upper reaches and other resources.
We have decided to supply water in shifts to the affected areas from today. However I make fervent appeal to people not to use water for irrigating parks and gardens," he added
Meanwhile, the farmer's dependent for irrigation on flowing from Gulmarg said their paddy crops have got badly affected. "Due to leak in the stream at various points water flow to our fields has been affected," farmer said.
Paddy fields in Kunzer, Tangmarag and Chandilora villages are facing shortage of irrigation water. Expressing concerns, farmers said that growth of paddy crops could be affected due to shortage of water in major streams.
"Hot summer season is on and the water level in streams is receding with each passing day. Cleaning of these water-bodies is necessary to increase the flow of clean water and ensure adequate supply of irrigation water to the fields," said Ghulam Nabi Dar of Tangmarag.
