'Nag Chhatri' smuggling goes unabated, witnesses higher 'smuggling trend'

Jammu, July 18 : Believe it or not the smuggling of medicinal herb Nag Chhatri, has become a new source to make quick money as it has reduced the pace of charas smuggling in from Srinagar, the most notorious districts for charas production. Now, instead of charas smuggling, illegal smuggling of precious Nag Chhatri is plaguing the police.
Smuggling of the endangered medicinal herb, nag chhatri (trillium govanianum), continues unabated in Jammu region of state and a fresh bid of smuggling the banned forest produce with the arrest of smugglers alongwith Nag Chhattri (forest produce) in mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to experts, Nag Chhatri does not need any maintenance and grows wild on the mountains, so it is better option for many charas cultivators, who have failed to hide their cannabis fields from police. "Demand has increased the rate of Nag Chhatri at villages where this rare herb is collected."We were informed by the villagers that last year rate was between Rs 1,000 to 1,500 per kg ,while this time it is between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000 per kg," he said. He said rare herb has great demand in China for which illegal extraction is being done in mountains of Doda-Ramban-Kishtwar Range.
The high demand for this rare Himalayan herb in the pharmaceutical sector has tempted the smugglers in a big and smugglers from even outside the state have been visiting the hilly districts of Jammu region especially Doda and Kishtwar. Doda- Kishtwar districts which virtually have become the hub of Nag Chhatri smuggling as police have effected huge recoveries from this district or people hailing from the district alone.
Due to its effective medicinal properties, the demand of this drug is high in the international markets and thus is in high demands in pharma sector.
In recent bid of smuggling case Nag Chhatri, police on tip off recovered sixty kilogram of rare medicinal herb Nag Chatri from forest area of Banihal on July 16. The rare forest product was kept in three gunny bags and concealed under dried leaves in the compartment.
However no arrests were made from the spot sources said adding that the consignment was brought to Forest Division office Ramban and investigation to nab the persons involved in extraction of the herb has been started. Meanwhile, 10-kg Nag Chattri was recovered from three persons at Pul Doda last week.
Earlier Police have arrested two persons along with 90 kilograms of forest produce (Nag Chatri- Trillium govanianum) from Kalnai bridge, falling under the jurisdiction of Thathri Police Station on June 13.
Before this in a similar bid, police arrested a person and recovered 10 kg of banned rare medicinal herb 'Nag Chhatri' from him in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on June 9.
Last year in the month of July, the sleuths of Excise Department seized a huge haul of 2150 kilograms of this rare herb popular known as Nag Chhatri from a truck at Lakhanpur toll plaza on July 28.
This was followed by another bid when Forest Department (J&K) led by Divisional Forest Officer Mazoor Hussain Gagroo intercepted a Punjab-bound truck bearing registration number HP 12C-4131 and reconverted Rs 4 crore worth banned medicinal herb seized besides arrest of six persons on August 1, 2013 and all accused from Himachal Pradesh.
Yet in similar bid Excise Department (J&K) sleuths seized rare herb at Lakhanpur Toll Post September 14, last year and recovered 1900 Kgs. of banned rare Herb (Nag Chhatri) from a truck (JK03A-6966)smuggling it outside J&K.
SP Doda Sherief Chouhan admitted that a slight shift has been noticed within illegal trade as smugglers are opting to smuggle nag chhatri instead of traditional narcotics drugs from the area. He meanwhile added that they will be soon tighten the noose upon the smuggling of forest produce. SP Doda also said the police will also be taking up the matter with forest department to check the smuggling of rare forest produce.
