CHC Kalakote lacks staff, lone doctor manages affairs | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 31: Contrary to tall claims of the state government that adequate staff including doctors have been provided at every health center across the state but the Community Health Center (CHC) at Kalakote presents a completely different picture as it is being run by only one Assistant Surgeon. CHC, Kalakote is single handedly run by Dr Rehman, who in case of an emergency is being helped by Block Medical Officer (BMO) Dr Suresh Gupta. PHC at Kalakote was converted into CHC recently and according to BMO Dr Suresh Gupta, it requires at least 18 doctors and additional infrastructure for its smooth functioning. "The matter has been taken up with the concerned senior officials including Chief Medical Officer (CMO) but till today the CHC is being run by only one doctor and no required facility including paramedical staff, medicines, modern instruments etc have been provided at this CHC," said BMO. He added that for the last few months the work load on this CHC has increased many folds and as the doctors/consultants are not available patients have either to be shifted to Rajouri or nearby Sub District Hospital at Sunderbani. Recently two patients who were referred to other hospital in the absence of doctors died on way, "Had they been provided with timely treatment at Kalakote their lives would have been saved," said Vijay Suri, Beopar Mandal President. On Wednesday after the death of a young girl, who had consumed some poisonous substance on Tuesday and was brought to CHC Kalakote also died on way to Sunderbani. Infuriated by girl's demise, the inhabitants of Kalakote and its adjoining areas closed their shops and held a mass protest demonstration against the Health authorities. They demanded from the authorities to provide required doctors at CHC Kalakote at the earliest otherwise they will go for bigger agitation and responsibility for any untoward incident would be of the administration. "The hospital at Kalakote is being run by a doctor and BMO. As the BMO have to look after the affairs of other health centers under his control, he is finding it very difficult to manage the working of the CHC. Every now and then the patients were referred to other hospitals and many times some of them die on way to hospitals," said Yash Pal, General Secretary, Kalakote Beopar Mandal. It is not only CHC, Kalakote the situation in the entire Kalakote medical block is worrisome as The staff strength at almost every health institution is well below the sanctioned posts. According to District Health authorities out of 33 sanctioned posts of Medical Officers, 27 are lying vacant and the health centres are either being run reportedly by pharmacists or by 4th class employees. Sub District Hospital at Triyath and PHCs at Khawas, Garan , Moghla (accident prone area as many coal mines are situated here), Darkari , Sialsui and Kotchrwal are functioning without Medical Officers MOs (2 posts of MOs sanctioned for each). Dr Rajeev Sharma, CMO when contacted by Early Times said that the district health department is facing acute shortage of doctors. The matter was taken up several times with the higher Health authorities including Director Health Services, Jammu. "The matter was also discussed with the Director immediately after a protest held at Kalakote on Wednesday. He has assured to provide few doctors at CHC, Kalakote within next few days," said CMO. |
