Cong screening committee to finalise names of candidates for Assembly polls
8/1/2014 11:53:07 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 1: The Congress has for the first time officially announced its screening committee to finalise names of candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state. The party was forced to do so after many aspirants started floating their names on the social media.
The Congress high command had directed the party to set up the screening committee to stop rumours being floated by some aspirants. The notable thing in the screening committee is the inclusion of Mohammad Sharief Niaz, more importantly because he is a close trustee of former Chief Minister GN Azad.
The name of Azad was missing in the list, though other two important persons on the J&K unit of the party, Ambika Soni and Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz were included in the list. Azad, who is the probable Chief Ministerial candidate of the party, didn't want to be included in the committee, as he would head it later and doesn't want to give an impression if he had selected the candidates and given preference to the people close to him.
The other important aspect of the formation of the committee is that party is still getting huge response from the people which is quite encouraging for the party which suffered huge defeat in the Parliamentary elections.
The party feels that the Parliamentary elections were contested on different issues and people voted more for Narendra Modi than against the party especially in the state where party feels it has worked more hard than ever before to safeguard the interests of Jammu region, where it claims to have a strong base.
According to sources, the party would most probably bring in fresh faces not only to connect with the people but also give an impression that party is serious in course correction and would not like to send a message that it has not acted against the corrupt despite the drubbing it suffered in the Parliamentary elections.
