Goddar Khalsa GMS engages minor students to fetch water | | | Ankush Sharma
Jammu, Sept 1: Throwing the famous quote written on walls of almost each school "Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve" to winds, the administration of Government Middle School (GMS), Goddar Khalsa, in Reasi, has been employing young students to fetch drinking water and for doing other menial jobs. The Early Times is in the possession of photographs and videos, in which young students are seen fetching water from nearby spring (bowli) for making mid day meal. "Nearly 100 students are enrolled in Goddar Khalsa middle school. The school administration is to make mid day meal and students routinely fetch water for it", a local of area said. He said that though a water connection was there in the school and a water tank was also there but it might be due to interruption in water supply, students were asked to fetch water. "When the students are engaged for such jobs in schools, they will not show much interest for studies", he said, adding that the non seriousness of teachers and Principal has badly affecting the studies of this village. The photographs in possession of Early Times also revealed that some students, not more than 12-13 years of age were deputed to dig ground to expand the schoo ground. "Even some villagers had also objected over the move of administration to employ students for digging but instead of mending their ways, the then Headmaster had brought police and threatened to teach a lesson to the villager, who had objected", another villager said. "The wards of teachers are studying in good private schools but the poor villagers are compelled to send their wards to government schools where they are being exploited by teachers, who know that these poor villagers are not going to report, so there is no harm to exploit them", a government employee of area said.He alleged that it was due to such appraoch of government school teachers that majority of students leave their studies half way and start doing menial jobs to support their families. "The administration must take strict action against the teachers and administration involved in child labour", he said.Zonal Education Officer of area, when contacted didn't pick up his phone, despite repeated attempts. |
