Let Pak troops avoid taking advantage of floods in J&K
9/11/2014 11:47:25 PM

Of late Pakistan has launched fresh offensive against terrorists who have, over the years, carved out safe sanctuaries in North Waziristan. In the latest strike as many as 35 suspected militants were killed in aerial strikes by fighter jets in the North Waziristan tribal region. Reports said "three terrorist hideouts were destroyed in precision strikes in the northwest of Dattakhel early on Wednesday.Dattakhel is considered a stronghold for terrorists and a targeted clearance operation is under way in the area. More air strikes may be carried out in and around Dattakhel which has also been a scene of numerous drone strikes in the past. The latest statement from the army comes as military operation Zarb-i-Azb is completing its third month. The operation was launched by the Pakistan Army on June 15 following a brazen militant attack on the Jinnah International Airport and failure of peace talks between the government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) negotiators. The Taliban and their ethnic Uzbek allies both claimed responsibility for the attack on the airport which was seen as a strategic turning point in how Pakistan tackles the insurgency.Nearly a million people have fled the offensive in North Waziristan and taken shelter at camps for the displaced.Though it is a belated action still it may not be too late to make amends.
Islamabad in general and the Army in Pakistan in particular decided to launch fresh offensive following reports that terrorists, especially the Taliban, were planning to strike at vital civilian and military installations in order to force the establishment in Pakistan to renew its offer for talks with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.Soon after the decision Pakistani Air Force jets pounded the Taliban hideouts, killing at least 35 militants in the restive North Waziristan tribal region, where the military is mounting a major offensive against the Taliban militants. And the Pakistani Army authorities had been peeved over the way militants has attempted attacking troops a day earlier in the same area.In the encounter Six militants, one soldier and a civilian staffer of the Army were killed in the area on Tuesday after a shootout between the security forces and the militants. Well the counter terrorist campaign, launched by the Army in Pakistan, can bear fruits if such operations remained a sustained feature till the last hideout of terrorists was demolished.
Well Islamabad new offensive against terrorists deserves appreciation from New Delhi provided such operations assume sharper teeth in the near future. And India may have no hesitation in appreciating latest Pakistan's military campaign against the terrorists provided the Army, guarding the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir, took firm steps for preventing militants from crossing into the Indian state. The recent heavy rain and floods, that have hit the state of Jammu and Kashmir like a Tsunami, are said to have damaged the border fence in some areas on this side of the LOC and the IB.There are fears that the Pakistan troops may try to take advantage of the snapped border fence and push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir at time when the bulk of the Army soldiers and security personnel were battling against several odds in carrying out relief and rescue measures.Still despite the calamity troops have been directed to remain on the alert and initiate any measures they deem proper to foil any and every ingress bid. What is surprising is the way militants, though their number is small, operating in Jammu and Kashmir tried to kick up violence despite the fact that the state was in the midst of deep crisis the result of flooded towns, cities and villages which has left about 300 people dead and four lakh stranded. The Army, Air Force and the Navy have evacuated over 75,000 stranded people still over four lakh continue to be trapped in their houses because of floods. It is time that Pakistani Army avoided taking advantage of the natural disaster that has hit Jammu and Kashmir by ensuring that not a single militant was allowed to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir. Also,Pakistani Army need to keep in mind the difficulties being faced by millions of people in Pakistan which also has been hit by floods. If it does so it may not allow subversives to destabilise peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
