As rumours fly, Centre clarifies J-K rescue not along communal lines
9/12/2014 12:23:10 AM
Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, Sept 11: The Centre has stepped in to quash rumours that flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir are being rescued on the basis of some of kind of priority set along communal lines.
Amidst reports of anger shown by flood victims of Jammu and Kashmir and incidents of stone pelting on rescuers, a Union Home Ministry official said there was no such prioritization of flood-affected people.
The only priority is to reach each and every flood victim in shortest span of time.
"The second priority is restoring communications networks at the earliest," said a Home Ministry official, requesting anonymity.
The official said the problem with the rescue work in Valley was that the water levels were receding very slowly.
"It is a massive tragedy and the Centre will ensure that relief must reach to all affected people. But they will have to show little patience as the magnitude of tragedy is very huge," he added.
According to MHA sources, there is practically no road left in the Valley. Water level in many localities is still six to seven feet high, making rescue operations very tedious.
The NDRF has deployed around 1000 trained rescuers with 150 boats to evacuate people from the affected areas where they are stranded.
The force has stationed 17 USAR teams in Srinagar city, three teams in Jammu and two teams in Awantipura areas.
