As Govt role in relief ops draws flak, CM throws eatables from chopper | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: As the near "invisible" role of his government in relief and rescue operations has come under severe criticism of the affected people in the valley, chief minister Omar Abdullah, in an attempt to make his presence felt and save him and his party candidates from an imminent embarrassment in the upcoming assembly elections, Wednesday threw some eatable from a chopper in the flood-hit areas. Angered by the failure of the government machinery for not doing enough in the flood-affected areas, some people hadTuesday last stoned his residence in Srinagar. Knowing that it would be very difficult for him and his party candidates to face the public in case they don't do anything for the flood victims, Omar took the first step Wednesday, though very late, to save themselves from such a situation when he peeped out from a helicopter window to tell the people that he was also part of the "relief and rescue" operations. To minimise the losses, Army, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force, marine commandoes and many unknown number of volunteers have already stepped up the rescue and relief operations in marooned Srinagar areas. Stung by the sharp criticism of his government over its very "poor" response in relief and rescue operations, the chief minister Wednesday threw some breads and other eatables from from a chopper in the flood-hit areas. He took this step only after stones were hurled at his residence by the people. Once the flood waters recede and the situation returns to normal, the public anger against the government was likely to mount. The anti-government public ire at this time when elections were due in the state was not a good omen for Omar and his NC. People also feel that instead of throwing eatables from the chopper, the chief minister should focus on the rescue operations by having repeated parleys with senior officers of the central rescue teams and devise ways for saving those still trapped in flood waters. There is a strong resentment among the people over the state government's failure to handle the situation efficiently after the rains and floods hit its most parts last week. They said while the top officers were housed at safer places such as Gupkar Road and Omar himself had shifted to Nehru guest house, they were left stranded in floods. It may be mentioned here that the death toll has reached about 300 and rescuers were unsure about the number of survivors in areas that are still under water. The Omar-led government has been under severe attack for its "slow response" to the crisis. |
