BJP ready to form govt in Maharashtra, plays hardball with Shiv Sena | | | Agencies
Mumbai, Oct 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party is in no mood to concede to unreasonable demands that the Shiv Sena has put forth in exchange of support for its government in the state. The BJP insiders said the party would go ahead with a minority government instead of giving the Sena a big share of cabinet berths and important departments. The pressure tactics seemed to have worked as the Sena, which demanded 14 berths in total 43-member council of ministers, has now dropped its demand to 10. However, the BJP is not willing to give Sena more than 5 berths, said party sources. The new government is likely to be sworn in at the Wankhede Stadium on October 29, sources indicated. If the Sena doesn't fall in line, the BJP will have its own team in place. The allies may also get some berths. Sources said the BJP did not worry about proving the majority in the house as it already had small parties and independents to take its tally to 138. The NCP has extended its support from outside and it may prove handy in case of trust vote. BJP leaders said the final ratio for distribution of cabinet berths could be decided only after the size of council of ministers is decided. "If the new team is small, the Sena will have accept even less," said a leader, requesting anonymity. He said the initial team of ministers was unlikely to be bigger. "We are waiting for the Sena to have a final talks with our national leaders on October 27. The state-level leaders will not hold ahy talks with the ex-ally," said another BJP leader. Union home minister Rajnath Singh is expected to visit the city on Monday for electing party's CM candidate.
The Sena, with 63 MLAs, has said it would support the BJP that won 122 (excluding one MLA of its ally) seats in the 288-member assembly. However, the BJP leaders insisted that the number of MLAs required (22) for making a majority be counted for deciding the ratio for sharing cabinet berths, instead of the Sena's entire number (63).
State unit president Devendra Fadnavis, who is set to be the next chief minister, held a meeting with opposition leader Vinod Tawde and national joint- general secretary V Satish on Saturday ahead of their meeting with prime minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. They were expected to tell Modi to let them do without the Sena. Modi is here to inaugurate a hospital. |
