Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 8 : Employees of the Hotel Centaur here today raised strong protest against the management of the Hotel Corporation of India (HCI) after the later dispatched a consignment of expired medicines for the flood affected employees of the hotel. A group of the employees of the hotel told Early Times that in the afternoon a consignment of medicines and blankets was received by them. The employees said that the medicines and blankets were ought to be distributed among the employees who got affected due to the devastating flood of September. "The consignment was sent by ChitanKak, Senior Vice-President, Hotel Corporation of India and it was meant for the flood affected employees of the hotel. However, to our utter dismay we found that the medicines had already expired and same would have acted as poison for the people who consumed them," said the employees. The employees after noticing that the medicines had already rang up the Prime Minister's office in New Delhi and narrated the whole tale to them. Following this necessary instructions were passed on to the authorities in Srinagar so that necessary action is taken.
"The PMO was quite prompt and they immediately rang up the Governor's office so that corrective action is taken. The message was passed on to the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and the concerned police station. A team of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) also reached the hotel to take stock of the situation," said employees. The SMC team headed by Health Officer, Dr. Rubina Shaheen seized the stock of expired medicines while as the stock of blankets was confiscated by the personnel of police station, Nishat led by its Station House Officer. Both the SMC and police expressed their dismay and surprise over the supply of expired medicines to the hotel employees. "In total there were 19 boxes in the consignment. While 16 boxes consisted of blankets the other boxes contained medicines that were found to be expired. The medicines had been manufactured in 1999 and had expired years and years ago. One fails to understand the motive behind this social service. It seemed that the management of HCI wanted to eliminate the employees and family members who have already been badly hit by the devastating flood," said employees. The employees demanded that a thorough probe should be carried out in the whole episode so that the truth comes to the forefront. They also said that stern action should be taken against the management more so the Vice-President who had dispatched the 'relief' material.
