With votes of KPs all set to get divided, Habba Kadal may yet again get Muslim legislator | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 8: The old adage 'too many cooks spoil the broth' fits the bill with respect to the Kashmiri Pandit candidates who are going to fight the elections from the Habba Kadal constituency in the summer capital of the state. As the Kashmiri Pandit votes are crucial in deciding the ultimate result for the Habba Kadal constituency it is quite obvious that this assembly segment is being watched keenly both by the public and the political analysts. However, as more than one Kashmiri Pandit candidate is fighting the elections it is quite obvious that the votes of the Kashmiri Pandit community are set to get divided. While as Moti Koul has been given the mandate by Bharatiya Janta Party, Indian National Congress has given the mandate to former Minister Raman Matoo from the Habba Kadal constituency. At the same time Sanjay Saraf has got the nod from Lok Jan-Shakti Party (LJP) and he too will fight the elections from this seat of Srinagar district. Interestingly, Saraf had some days back created hype that he enjoys the support of BJP and that the party would support his candidature from the Habba Kadal constituency. However, this turned out to be a mere claim with the BJP announcing the name of Moti Koul as the party candidate. Political analysts say that the candidature of Koul, Matoo and Saraf has virtually dented the hopes of Kashmiri Pandits that somebody among them would win the Habba Kadal seat this time around. Matoo had won this seat in 2002 but he could not repeat his performance in 2008 when Shameema Firdous got elected from this constituency. In the present scenario it is quite likely that the candidates belonging to National Conference and People’s Democratic Party might get the edge over their opponents. The sitting legislator has more chances since she would sell some of the 'achievements' made during the past six years. The developmental works even if minimal are quite enough to make her sail through this time too. There is a general feeling among the members of Kashmiri Pandit community that failure to project a single candidate is going to impact the final result for the Habba Kadal constituency. The members of the community opine that division of opinion has led to a situation where more than one candidate of the community is fighting the elections. This they say is not good more so when the burning issues being faced by community are not being solved by the people at the helm. Habba Kadal is one of the few constituencies in the Kashmir valley where Kashmiri Pandits hold the key to the final result. The voting pattern of the community members seals the fate of the candidates fighting the elections from this assembly segment. If there is a consensus among the Kashmiri Pandits as whom to vote among the community candidates then it is quite possible that this seat would be represented by a Kashmiri Pandit. Otherwise, it is quite possible that the seat may be represented by a Muslim candidate yet again. |
