Jammu, Nov 28: On the fourth Tawi river bridge at Bhagwati Nagar here, the forcible stopping of a motorcycle by traffic police copsSunday turned out to be fatal. According to police sources, two youth on a motorbike were on their way from Ware House to Bhagwati Nagar via fourth bridge on river Tawi. While they were about to cross the bridge, they spotted a traffic police naka. The youth, who was driving the motorcycle, was not wearing a helmet. Eyewitness said in their attempt to stop them, a traffic police cop caught hold of the bike's handle as a result of which the youth lost balance and the two-wheeler collided with the traffiic police Gypsy parked there. Both the youth were injured and shifted to GMCH here, they informed. They said instead of shifting the injured, the traffic police cops had fled the spot. Some locals had shifted the injured to hospital where one of them pronounced as brought dead. The deceased has been identified as Sidharth Mattos (25), son of Deepak Mattoo of Anand Nagar, Talab Tillo, and inured as Vishal (23), son of Tritha, of Talab Tillo. Locals later staged a protest against the traffic police and raised slogans against them while criticising them. They alleged that traffic cops had been collecting "hafta" from majority of traffic violators, including buses and minibuses, were harassing two-wheelers. They demanded immediately arrest of the accused and strict action against them. SP, North, Shiv Kumar Singh later visited the spot and assured the protesters that a probe would be conducted into the incident. "We will take suitable action after inquiry and also take up matter with higher officials of traffic police," he stated. SSP, traffic, Jammu, Mohan Lal said DTI Kulbeer Singh and three cops -- Parminder Singh, Girdari Lal and Mustaq Ahmed - had been suspended in this connection. "An inquiry is also initiated under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), South," he informed. He said directions would be issued to cops to ensure that "no traffic police personnel uses sticks or forcibly stops bikers". |
