Panicked by his likely defeat, NC MLA had rushed to separatist Geelani

ET Report
JAMMU, Nov 28: Panicked by his likely defeat because of the strong anti-NC wave gripping the state for its alleged failure on almost every front during its 6-year rule, a party MLA did not shy away from rushing to separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani to "indirectly" seek his support.
NC legislator Mohammad Ashraf Ganai is contesting on party ticket from Sopore constituency which has a sizeable number of Kashmiri Hindu migrant voters. A majority of them do not cast their vote in favour of NC as, apart from separatists and militants, they also hold the party responsible for their mass exodus from the Valley in 1989-90.
Ganai knew that Kashmiri migrants were unlikely to vote for him but he got worried more when Geelani gave a poll boycott call in the Valley a few days back. It gave him sleepless nights. He was so perturbed that he could not stop himself from visiting the separatist leader at the latter's residence in the Valley.
He urged him to take back his poll boycott call. The NC leader held the view that if Muslims do not exercise their right to franchise, KP votes would en masse go to the BJP candidate, deteriment of the Kashmir's interests, and he would win in such a situation.
The victory of BJP candidate was not good for the Valley, he was quoted to have told Geelani during his conversation with him. By asking Geelani to withdraw his poll boycott call, the NC candidate indirectly sought his support to ensure his win. When he found that the Sopore public had turned against NC, he did not hesitate from visiting the separatist leader, a PDP leader said, adding that it was NC's "politics of opportunism".
According to NC spokesman Junaid Mattoo, Ganai had met Geelani and asked him not to insist on his poll boycott call as it could help the BJP bag the Sopore seat, from where he is seeking re-election.
He said the MLA had requested Geelani to not press for his poll boycott call for the good of the state. He had also cited apprehensions regarding the BJP's plan to abrogate Article 370, saying it was not good for Kashmir.
He called the elections crucial and warned that boycott would have "far-reaching, irreversible and detrimental consequences not only to Article 370 or our special status but also to our political stature".
Sopore is among the seats, which BJP is said to be confident of winning, relying on low voting percentage and migrant Kashmiri votes.
