Campaigning for final phase ends, Dy CM among 4 ministers in fray | 20 Assembly segments going to polls Saturday | | Akshay Azad

Jammu, Dec 18 : The campaigning for fifth and final phase of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly polls ended on Thursday evening. A total of twenty assembly segments of Jammu region including the largest voter constituency of state will go to polls in the phase and polling will held on Dec 20. The phase will decide the fate of Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, three cabinet ministers including Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister, Sham Lal Sharma and Minister for Urban Development & Urban Local Bodies, Raman Bhalla and Minster for Planning and Development Department, Ajay Kumar Sadotra, and Minister of State for Cooperatives, Printing & Stationary and Elections, Manhoar Lal Sharma besides, former Health Minister, Shabir Ahmed Khan. A total 213 candidates are in the fray for the last phase. The Assembly segments going to polls included 11 constituencies of Jammu district, five of Kathua district and four of Rajouri district. In 2008 polls, 10 seats wrested by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), five by Congress, two by National Conference, one by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and two by Independent candidate. The Assembly segments represented by BJP candidates included, Bani by Lal Chand, Basholi by Jagdish Raj Sapolia, Hiranagar by Durga Dass, Nagrota by Jugal Kishore, Jammu East by Ashok Kumar Kahjuria, Jammu West by Chaman Lal Gupta, R S Pura by Gharu Ram Baghat, Suchetgarh by Sham Lal Choudhary, Marh by Sukh Nanadan Kumar and Raipur Domana by Bharat Bhushan. The five constituencies represented by Congress candidates included Billawar by Manhor Lal Sharma, Gandhi Nagar by Raman Bahalla, Rajouri by Shabir Ahmend Khan Akhnoor by Shama Lal Sharma and Chamb by Tara Chand. The two constituencies represented by National Conference (NC) Candidates included Nowshera by Radhay Sharma, Kalakote by Rachpal Singh and Darhal was only constituency represented by PDP candidate Zulfikar. Besides, Kathua constituency represented by independent candidate Charnjeet Singh and Bishanah by Ashwani Khujria, who has recently joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). In last and fifth phase of the polls, 18.28 lakh voters including 9.5 lakh male and 8.6 female will cast their votes. According to statics furnished by state electoral office, the district Jammu has largest number of voters among three districts. Jammu district has total voters included 10.10 lakh including 5.23 lakh male and 4.8 female voters. In further breakup statics reveals that Nagrorta has highest number of 721256 registered voters, Gandhi Nagar has 1.68 lakh voters, Jammu east has 53316 voters, Jammu West has 1.53 lakh voters, Bishanah has 89188 voters, R S Pura has 77134 voters, Suchet Garh has 62095 voters, Marh has 71361 voters, Raipur Domana has 96694 voters, Akhnoor has 94419 voters and Chhamb has 72413 voters. Similarly, Kathua has 4.32 lakh registered voters including 2.30 lakh male electors and 2.01 lakh female voters. Moreover Bani has 41506 voters, Basohli 75357 voters, Kathua 1.12 voters, Billawar 95728 voters and Hira Nagar has 1.07 lak voters. Likewise, Rajouri district has 3.85 lakh voters including 2.04 lakh male voters and 1.81 female voters. Nowshera has 92719 voters, Darhal has 93082 voters, Rajouri has 1.13 voters and Kala Kote has 86056 voters. For the 5th phase, the ECI has set-up 2366 polling stations. Of these, 517 will be in Rajouri, 1224 in Jammu, and 625 in Kathua. |
