SRINAGAR, Dec 18: In what could be termed as the highhandedness on part of the government, Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers engaged under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme are without salaries for the past eight months.
ReT teachers' forum chairman Farooq Ahmad Tantray expressed his serious concerns about the dilly dallying tactics of the government saying that it had badly affected the mental and physical health of the teachers working under SSA, a centrally-sponsored scheme.
"Nobody is listening to us. Non-payment of salaries has brought frustration among ReT teachers working under SSA. There seems to no end to our miseries as the government is busy in elections these days," he said.
He said the share of the Centre in their salary is 65 pc and that of the state government is 35 pc. Though the Centre released Rs 170 cr just some days back for the disbursement of their salaries but there had been delay on the part of finance department, he added.
"Even after the disbursement of this amount, their five and a half months' salaries will remain pending. Given the hard days, the non-payment of the salary for the last eight months has subjected the teachers to tremendous hardships. We are really suffering on this account," he said.
The non-payment of the salary has given rise to many more problems. It has affected the education of their children. They are unable to complete the construction of their houses. The banks, from which these teachers had availed loans, are demanding the repayment of monthly instalments.
"The banks have toughened their stance since we have failed to pay the monthly instalment for the last eight months. The banks have begun to apply pressure tactics and are threatening that the compound interest will be charged from us on the outstanding," said Mohammad Saleem Rather and Mohammad Iqbal Bhat, who are working as ReTs under SSA.
Tantray said the female teachers engaged under the Kasturiya Gandhi Bhavan Vaidalya (KGBV), hadn't been regularized even after six and a half years of their services. Under normal circumstances, candidates are regularized after the completion of five years of service, he added.
He also expressed his deepest condolences to the parents who lost their children in the barbaric attack of terrorists on army public school in Peshawar, Pakistan.
