Another sarpanch falls on last phase of polling

BARAMULLA, Dec 20: On the fifth and last phase of Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, another Sarpanch was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Bomai area of Sopore town of District Baramulla in North Kashmir on Saturday.
According to sources that, Ghulam Ahmad Bhat 65, Sarpanch was shot dead from very close range by unidentified gunmen in Bomai area of Sopore town on Saturday morning..
"Bhat had won during Panchayat elections on the ticket of National Conference, however he had supported Congress party during the ongoing assembly elections, he said.
"Bhat was shot at near his residence,while being shifted to hospital he succumbed to his bullet injuries," sources informed.
Close relative of the deceased Nazir Ahmad told early times that, " the village-headman had survived a bid on life in 2010 when suspected militants fired a volley of bullets on him. He had received bullets in his arm in the shoot-out and had survived miraculously.
According to relative that soon after the attack he joined Congress party but recently, he had declared his support for independent candidate Irshad Kar and canvassed in his favour during the election campaign.
A senior police official told early times that police have registered an FIR on the incident and an investigation has been initiated to identify the culprit behind this murder.
Official said that the incident of Sarpanch killing happened at a time when last phase of assembly election was under way.
Soon after the killing of Sarpanch, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, including Army, paramilitary and counter-insurgency unit of police cordoned off the whole area and conducted door to door searches, but no arrests were made, official informed.
It is pertinent to mention here that on December 13 former Congress Sarpanch was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Hygam area of Sopore town in Baramulla district on the last Saturday morning.
The sarpanch was first abducted on Friday evening and later was shot deadon Saturday morning in Shalbagh orchards near Hygam in Sopore town of Baramulla district.
With this killing, three Sarpanchs have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the state during the ongoing assembly elections, a Sarpanch Mohammed Sultan was killed before two weeks in Shopian area of South Kashmir and then after one more Sarpanch namely Ghulam Mohammed Mir alias Bedar of Hygam Sopore and today Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Bomai Sopore was killed on Saturday in north Kashmir.
