JAMMU, Feb 19: The ninth District Jammu and Ist Invitational Archery Championship attracted a big crowd of young and upcoming boys and girls. The competition is being organised by J&K Archery Association at Mini Stadium, Parade, here under the aegis of J&K State Sports Council. However, except for a couple of demonstrations by the junior and senior boys, the actual scheduled competition in mini and sub-junior categories could not take place due to heavy rains in the city. Now, the organising committee has shifted today's competition for tomorrow. Since the rains are predicted for tomorrow also, this three-day event may extend for a day or two. "A good number of boys and girls are taking part in mini and sub-junior group which is really an encouraging sign. A new beginning has been made to promote the game in the state, so we are hopeful of healthy response from everyone associated with Archery directly or indirectly," said general secretary of the Association, Sunil Sharma. Earlier, the competition was declared open by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Shantmanu, who was chief guest. He interacted with the young participants and encouraged them in their endeavour to excel in the game. Speaking to the gathering, he assured all possible help from the government in making the traditional game a success in the state. To boost the morale of those budding talent, president of the Association and Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Ajit Kumar Sahu demonstrated the skills of Archery by hitting the target amidst applause from the gathering of players and their parents. In his welcome address, he briefed the gathering about the three-day competition. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Armed, Mukesh Singh and general secretary of J&K Olympic Association, Ashutosh Sharma were guests of honour in the opening function. The opening also marked a colourful presentations by the students of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Mubarak Mandi, Police Public School, GHSS Shastri Nagar, Government SRML Higher Secondary School and Girls High School Jullakha Mohalla. |
