Kashmir valley in grip of intense cold wave as rain, snow hit people badly

SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Kashmir valley is in grip of intense cold following snow in the countryside and the higher reaches with the plains also receiving rains and snow as well. The inclement weather led to the closure of 294 kilometres long Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
Meanwhile, the divisional administration of Kashmir has issued avalanche warning to the people living in the higher reaches of the valley that are expected to witness heavy snowfall in the coming few days. People living in these areas have been asked to take precautions while moving out of their houses.
Reports reaching here said that all the major districts and towns of Kashmir valley received fresh bout of snowfall while as in the plains there were rains in the morning followed by snow later on. All the major health resorts and tourist places in the Kashmir valley experienced moderate to heavy snowfall since last evening. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state witnessed rains in the morning followed by snow. The weather remained inclement during the course of the day with majority of the people preferring to remain indoors. The continuous rainfall and snow led to water logging in many areas of the city with people facing hardships in moving around. The day temperature plummeted to below 5 degrees Celsius with the mercury settling at 4.4 degrees Celsius with the night temperature being recorded as 4 degrees Celsius. The city experienced 14.8 millimeters of rain upto 5:30 PM. Over the past few days the summer capital has recorded more than 80 millimeters of rainfall. An official of Meteorological (MeT) department forecast that light to moderate rain would occur at most places of the state. The official said that a fresh western disturbance would hit the state on February 23 adding that there would be an increase in the precipitation across the state up to February 25.
Reports said that world famous health resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir experienced one feet of fresh snow leading to joy among the tourists who are holidaying there. Tourists including foreign tourists could be seen throwing snow balls at each other while enjoying their outing in the snow. The road leading to Gulmarg from Tangmarg was filled with snow and it became difficult for the motorists to drive on the snow. Reports of moderate to heavy snowfall have also come in from other health resorts like Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg and Ducksum.
Moderate to heavy snowfall has also been experienced at places in districts like Ganderbal, Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Rohit Kansal has said that medium danger of avalanche warning exists from February 19 to February 20, 2015 in avalanche prone areas of Bandipora, Kupwara and Kargil districts of Kashmir Division.
In view of the warning, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir has asked the Deputy Commissioners of Bandipora, Kupwara, Baramulla and Kargil to advise people not to venture out in avalanche prone areas. People of these areas have also been advised to temporarily evacuate those locations which are under the fall line of avalanches.
