Jammu walkathon on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao organized

Jammu, Feb 21: To raise widespread awareness in the society about saving and educating the girl child, Indian Red Cross Society, J&K State, in collaboration with National Health Mission, organized Jammu Walkathon on "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao".
Almost 4000 students from various educational institutions, volunteers, police, Bharat Scouts and Guides, senior citizens and members of civil society participated in the Walkathon.
The Walkathon was flagged off by Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, K Rajendra Kumar from Govt. Women College, Parade, Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Police appreciating the organizers of the programme said that conducting awareness programmes and rallies about the cause "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" will be highly useful in sensitizing the community about saving, educating and providing dignity to the girl child. He further said that males have an equally important role to play in eradicating the discrimination towards women in the Society and creating an enabling environment for women to live with respect.
Earlier while welcoming the participants Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Mission Director, National Health Mission highlighted some of the measures taken by the Govt. to eradicate the menace of sex determination and illegal selective abortions. He spoke about the awards to whistle blowers and appealed the people to support the Govt. initiatives to create an equitable Society in which men and women enjoy equal status. He described the relevance of the initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao critical to J&K State because of its alarming child sex ratio of 862 as against National average of 919.
Speaking on the occasion Roma Wani, General Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, J&K State said that it is only through awareness that we can protect those who are actually responsible for carrying forward existence.
Er. Kiran Wattal, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation who was Guest of Honour at the concluding ceremony assured full support in promoting the greater cause of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. He highlighted the vital role that must be played by men to make it possible for women to exist without fear.
Dr. Hemla Aggarwal, Principal, Govt. Women College, Parade, Jammu stressed the need for involvement of all quarters including the civil society organizations in promoting the cause of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
As a symbolic gesture to give "wings" to the girl child, colourful balloons were flown in the sky all through the walkathon and all the participants pledged to carry the message to friends and family. The participating educational institutions assured to strengthen the awareness in their educational institutions.
