Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 21: Increasing cases of Swine flu in Jammu and Kashmir have caught the administration napping as it seems ill prepared to tackle the threat at holy town of Katra where thousands of pilgrims arrive daily from badly infected states across the country.
Sources informed Early Times that till date state government is unaware about Katra where there is high possibility of H1N1 influenza spreading rapidly and reaching Jammu.
Pertinently, every day thousands of pilgrims from badly infected states visit Katra which poses huge threat to locals as well as the pilgrims of Jammu division. Interestingly, there is no facility at SDH Katra to collect samples for Swine Flu.
The Health Department has only established an isolated ward for suspected patients but has failed to provide lab facilities where samples would be collected. If anyone wants to test for their satisfaction he or she have to visit Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu.
Criticizing state government, Ashok Sharma resident of Katra said that it was the responsibility of the government to equip the district hospitals, sub district hospitals across the state with proper diagnostic centers especially sample collecting centre without any delay but it has failed to provide such facilities in sub district hospitals.
Sharma said that the response shown by the health authorities has been one of the contributing factors in aggravating the situation. It is like that our health authorities were caught unaware. If many cases tested positive for the H1N1 in last few days, why our health department failed to enhance infrastructure and launch an awareness campaign on precautions to be taken against this deadly flu in the state.
When contacted Block Medical Officer Dr Gopal Dutt said that the hospital has no facilities to collect samples, if we find any suspect we refer him to GMCH Jammu for tests.
