Rehabilitation of displaced persons

JAMMU, Feb 24: President Pranab Mukherjee's February 23 address to the joint-session of Parliament was quite inspiring as far as the State of Jammu & Kashmir was concerned. Besides throwing ample light on the BJP-led NDA Government's achievements and social, economic and foreign policies, it talked extensively about the people of Jammu & Kashmir, particularly about the displaced segments of society, as also about the role of the Army. More importantly, it stated that Jammu & Kashmir occupies a place of enormous importance in the agenda of the Central Government. "J&K occupies a place of enormous importance in the agenda of the central government," President Mukherjee said, thus suggesting that the Union Government attaches utmost importance to the people of Jammu & Kashmir State. The Presidential Address not just attached utmost importance to Jammu & Kashmir state, but also gave the nation to understand that the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre is not only feeling concerned over the plight of the displaced segments of society but also recognizes the splendid role the Army played in the State during the devastating September floods. "The government has 'endeavoured to create a conducive and enabling environment' in the state, especially for various displaced segments of its population," his address said, and added the government's endeavours includes facilitating the rehabilitation of over 60,000 Kashmiri Pandits families. "The Central Government has taken effective steps in this regard. These include, inter alia, providing government jobs, economic opportunities and security" to the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus," his address said. And as for the role of the Army, the address, inter-alia, said: "The nation is deeply indebted to our armed forces and paramilitary forces for the outstanding service rendered during the relief operations to flood affected people in Jammu & Kashmir".
That the Presidential Address talked about the importance of J&K, about the displaced segments of the society and their rehabilitation and about the role of the Army only proved that the Union Government was fully aware of the realities in the state. That it said what should have been said must inspire the people of the state. It is hoped that the problems being faced by the various displaced segments of society would be tackled by the Union Government sooner than later and that the state as a whole would make all round progress in the coming days. The hope stems from the fact that the BJP, which is at the helm of affairs at the Centre, will be an important part of the state government as well.
