Jammu, Feb 24 : The National Youth Awardees' Forum of India (NYAFI) organised a seminar on the theme 'Eradication of Poverty through Education" in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, University of Jammu, and Nehru Yuva Kendra, Jammu at the Brigader Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu. The seminar is the first of its kind organised in Jammu by NYAFI, after its programmes in the North-East and Uttar Pradesh. National Youth Awardees' Forum of India (NYAFI) is a group of National Youth Awardees and Indira Gandhi NSS National Awardees across the country working together to address the burning issues of the society. In his keynote address, Dr Prabha Kant IRS, Director General, NYKS, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, delivered a special address during the seminar. He said that education is the brightest hope for breaking the cycle of multi-generational poverty and inequality. He also mentioned the need to enlighten and create widespread awareness of skill based education among all sections of society particularly in rural areas and among the urban poor. "The power of technology could be used for this social purpose. He also congratulated the initiative taken by NYAFI for creating awareness on the eradication of poverty through education, he added. The seminar began with the lightening of lamp followed by welcome address by Dr Aarti Bakhshi, Head, Department of Psychology, University of Jammu. She also gave a brief account of objective of the seminar and topic. In his address Puneet Pradhan, President, NYAFI, stressed the need of quality and equitable education as the need of the hour since education serves as the most effective solution for most of the persistent problems of the society. The seminar had a special mention about Dr Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KISS and KIIT University, as a testimony to the theme of the seminar who besides being an internationally renowned social entrepreneur and educationalist, is a living example of how education could be used as the means for the upliftment of the marginalised and the underprivileged. His passion to provide equal opportunities for the underprivileged led to the establishment of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a free residential institute for 22,500 tribal students. The function was presided over by Prof Posh Charak, Dean Research, University of Jammu and the vote of thanks was presented by Soba Ram KAS (Retd) Director Protocol, J&K Government. Faculty members of University and colleges were also present. The volunteers included Richa Gupta, Navjyot Bakshi, Rahul Prashar, Kamalpreet, Ravinder, Rahil,,Amjad, Charan, Ashim ,Nisha ,Preeti, Dharvinder, Richa Arora, Karuna Gupta and other students of department of Psychology helped in organizing the seminar. |
