Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 22 : Unemployment continues to expose the tall claims of the state government as the number of unemployed youth registers increase with every passing day.
The government has admitted on the floor of the Lower House that are as many as 2,22,180 unemployed youth have registered themselves across the state.
However, this figure may not be final as the information provided by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in a written reply to the question tabled by the National Conference (NC) MLA Mian Altaf Ahmad, revealed that since the process of registration is not compulsory so the total number of unemployed youth could be much higher The government in its reply to NC legislator Mian Altaf's query said, "2,22,180 unemployed youth have registered themselves with the District Employment and Counseling Centres as per the live register as on ending December 2014."
"This figure may be even higher as the registration is a voluntary process and not a mandatory one," the reply added.
On measures being taken to tackle the problem of unemployment among the educated youth, the government replied that in order to tackle the unemployment problem, various initiatives from time to time have been taken.
In addition to JK Self Employment Scheme (JKSES) introduced in 1995, the latest being the launch of a policy document on employment named Sher-e-Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme for the Youth (SKEWPY) in December 5, 2009.
The reply further said that the all the departments have put efforts on large scale to tackle the problem of unemployment among youth besides to generate more employment opportunities participation of private sectors and self employment ventures have also been encouraged.
The schemes like J&K Self Employment Scheme, Seed Capital Fund Scheme, Youth Start-up Loan Scheme, National Minority Development Finance Corporation, Women Entrepreneurship Progr-amme, Voluntary Service Allowance, Udaan and Himayat are already in existence to address the issue of unemployment, the reply maintained.
However, the reply informing that government has introduced slew of measures to generate new employment opportunities proves to be insufficient as the figures of more than two lakh unemployed youth, even higher, suggests so.
