Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 22 : The workers under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) of Block, Marheen in Kathua district have been deprived of their wages for over a year that are due to them against works done under NREGA. Despite repeated representation and appraisal by Panchayat representative, to concerned Block Development Officer (BDO), the department has failed to release the pending dues to the claimants. Source informed Early Times that some panchayats were detached from Block Hiranagar and Barnoti, to establish new block Marheen with great enthusiasm amongst the locals, but the same ebbed out soon when the residents were deprived of their legitimate dues. Sarpanch Darshan Lal of Chak Haria said that he had got works worth more than seven lakhs done in his panchayat but the department has not released a single penny so far. "Our repeated representations have borne no fruits except empty recurring regarding paucity of funds" he added. He further said that some of the workers in his panchayat had no other source of income except wages from NREGA and if the department did not release their dues soon, they shall ot be able to sustain their families. Sarpanch, Puran Chand of Chak Nathal said that it was not the problem of one panchayat, as all the 21-panchayats falling under newly constructed Marheen block were facing same problem . "When we apprised former BDO of Marheen, he said your liabilities will be addressed by the parent block (Barnoti) but same are not being released from there also", he said. BDO Marheen, Subash Bhagat when contacted said that soon funds would be released and distributed to all the beneficiaries. |
