Infant girl's death: Police rejects 'leopard attack claim', initiates inquest proceedings

Rajouri, Apr 17: Rajouri police after physical verification of the body of two year old girl, today claimed that the girl was not killed by the leopard- as claimed by the family members on Thursday, but had died in suspicious circumstances and thus initiated inquest proceeding u/s 174CrPC in this regard.
On Thursday police recovered the body of the deceased from a rivulet about one kilometer away from her house with only minor visible mark on her face.
Sr Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajouri Dr Haseeb Mughal said that family members have approached the police at Thanamandi Police Station with a complaint that their two year old girl Rukhsana was lifted by a leopard which disappeared in the forest along with the girl.
"Following complaint a police party headed by Nissar Ahmed, concerned SHO along with Dr Abdul Kabir , tehsildar rushed to the village and a search operation was launched in collaboration with officials from Wild Life department, police official said. He said, "During search operation, police found the body of the girl from a local rivulet some one kilometer from the site as claimed by the mother from where the girl was allegedly picked up by the leopard."
"The claims from the family members and other villagers that the girl was lifted by leopard seemed to be baseless as the girl had no visible injury marks on her body, SSP Rajouri said. 'Had the leopard attacked and dragged the girl, the body should have marks of dragging as well mauling by the leopard" said SSP Rajouri.
Meanwhile Dr Mehmood, Medical Superintendent , District Hospital Rajouri has also denied the claims of family members that girl was killed by the leopard as only small cut mark was found on her face during postmortem. Medical Superintendent D H Rajouri also said the death due to drowning can't be ruled out while her body parts have been sent to FSL at Jammu for experts report.
Family members have claimed that Rukhsana d/o Muktiar Hussain resident of Cambrigali (near Saj village) was following her mother to the nearby fields when she disappeared allegedly made prey by the leopard that intruded in the village in the late evening hours on Wednesday.
