Make Srinagar-Jammu highway motorable in one week: HC

Srinagar, Apr 17: The state High Court has directed Chief Engineer R&B Department to make internal roads in Kashmir motorbale while as it granted week's time to union government about steps taken for making Srinagar-Jammu highway motorbale.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of the court Justices Muzaffar Hussain Attar and B S Walia passed the directions after hearing S A Makroo, Assistant Solicitor General of India and Additional Advocate General M A Chashoo.
Makroo prayed for one week's time so as to enable him inform the court about the steps taken for making the highway, at least up to Qazigund, motorable.
He submitted that steps will be taken on war footing to restore the road to a condition which will enable the commuters to have smooth and hassle free travel on it.
Last week the court had issued notice to state government, Director General National Authority of India New Delhi, project manager NHAI, Director General BRO as well as Managing Director and project manager Ramky Infrastructure for file reply to the PIL filed by civil society Tral through its general secretary Shabir Ahmad Bhat.
The civil society seeks directions to the respondents for repairing the National Highway from Jammu to Srinagar especially from Banlhal to Srinagar and Srinagar to Baramulla.
The petitioners also seeks directions commanding the respondents to constitute a team of experts to have physical spot inspection and conduct survey of NH1A and other link roads of Kashmir valley to assess the gravity of dilapidated condition of the roads and submit a detailed report with complete remedial suggestions in a time bound period.
It also seeks direction for fixing liability of maintenance of the existing HH1A from Jammu to Srinagar for the purposes of maintenance and development, on war footing basis.
The petitioners also seeks directions to authorities including the police to take action against the residents involved in directing the flow of sewage water on the roads throughout the whole state of Jammu and Kashmir.
They also seeks directions to engineer R&B Kashmir and Jammu, asking them to submit a detailed report of the strength of the road guards and coolies born on the establishment of the respondent R&B Department and explain why such employees are paid from the state exchequer when they never work practically to maintain the roads and prevent the damage to the roads.
