Despite 'model' tag Jammu Rly Stn sans basic facilities

JAMMU, Aug 19: Despite having being given the status of Model Railway Station, the Jammu Railway Station lacks even the provision of basic facilities necessary for the passengers in order to provide them hassle free services.
Thousands of commuters who reach or leave Jammu Railway Station on a daily basis are facing a lot of hardships these days due to the non-functioning of the Inquiry Booth set up inside the Ticket Reservation Centre within the station premises for the last one week.
With the Inquiry Counter down due to a technical snag in the computer for the last seven days, the passengers are running from pillar to post to get the desired information related to the availability of reservation in trains, train numbers for filling the reservation forms and most essential of all- to know the PNR status of their respective tickets.
Like several other passengers making rounds of the inquiry counter, a resident of Faridabad (Haryana), Tulika Dutt told Early Times that she had come to Jammu for attending a close relative's function and after taking part in it she has to board a train for New Delhi on Thursday, adding that however when she reached Railway station for making the inquiry with regard to seat availability in Delhi bound trains she came to know that the inquiry booth is closed due to some technical problems.
"To check the status of seat availability was no less than an uphill task for me as after coming from one end of the city i.e. Janipura to Railway station, I was dumbstruck to find that the inquiry counter was not functioning and on top of it other railway employees who are functioning from other counters were not willing to give any kind of information," said Dutt.
In the event of the closure of inquiry counter, the passengers are left with no other option but to seek information from travel agents.
Sources informing Early Times said that the negligence on part of the railway authorities could be gauged from the fact that till date neither an engineer to make repair of the faulty computer has visited the reservation centre nor a replacement of the same was initiated adding that a vital component like inquiry counter for facilitating smooth functioning of the rail services is facing pure official apathy and nothing else.
Sources said that not only the inquiry booth's service has been affected but the weighing machine installed at the main entrance, just adjacent to the X-Ray machine of Jammu Railway Station is also not working for quite some time now but nobody bothers to get it repaired or replaced.
Sources further informed that the automatic machines installed to provide information for PNR status are also lying defunct for the last several months as the contract with the company which was engaged for their upkeep has expired and an alternative arrangement is yet to be made, till then the machines act as mere showpieces.
