| Patriotism, loyalty vital for a nation to survive | | | Tahir Ali Shah
Patriotism and loyalty are vital ingredients for any
nation to survive and strive. The two are insepa-
rable.
It is not just on National Day that we talk about being patriotic and loyal.
That should be with us every day. It should be an integral part of our lives like food, water and shelter. For practical implementation of this thought in true sense of life, people should teach their children the importance of being loyal and faithful towards one's nation and inculcate good morals and values in them so that they would grow up being a responsible human being. In future they would in turn realize their responsibilities towards their nation and would teach their children same lesson they learnt as toddlers.
What is patriotism? It is akin to nationalism i.e. one's feeling of love and loyalty to one's country and its way of life; Loyalty to the country and its people, to protect the country's prestige and reputation; Loyalty to the government running the country; and also to the individuals running the government, running the country.
"What do we mean by patriotism in the context of our times? I venture to suggest that what we mean is a sense of national responsibility … a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime," said Stevenson, an American politician and envoy.
On patriotism, one dictionary compares it to nationalism - devotion to one's own country and concern for its defence.
As for loyalty, we can surmise that it is the state of quality of being loyal and faithful towards commitments and obligations. It also entails faithful adherence to a government, leader, cause, etc. It therefore would not be wrong to say that a person who lacks loyalty could not be called a patriot.
While it is patriotism to the nation to support a good and responsible administration, it is also patriotic to help to get rid of a bad government which overlooks the well-being of a common man and of the nation as a whole. A bad government is hence responsible for the poor economic growth of a nation. It is crucial for any government to work towards the progress of a nation.
With loyalty and patriotism comes faith. To build faith in any system, organization or government, a person needs to have full confidence in the members it constitutes of, their background and the role they play once they get appointed to a responsible post of representing the people.
Our patriotism reflects in our voting during elections. Electing someone with a criminal background and then expecting our welfare would be like expecting the impossible.
Voting is our right but more than a right it's a duty and responsibility towards our nation. Therefore, vote and choose your leader wisely. It's the least amount of contribution from a citizen of a country.
"If politicians in the country remain true to the facts and their views are based on the scrupulous adherence to evidence produced by researchers and more informed stakeholders, it can only benefit our nation by holding them to higher standards of knowledge, responsibility and governance."
