Ban on live telecast of Assembly proceedings surprises people

Srinagar, Sept 30: J&K Government's ban on live telecast of the House proceedings has shocked many scribes in the State who believe the gag order is an indication that ruckus would be witnessed during the coming autumn session of the Assembly here.
Legislative Assembly's Speaker Kulvinder Gupta on Tuesday said that electronic media would not be allowed to live telecast the proceedings of the House. "At times there are some incidents and happenings in the House which are not appropriate to be telecast live. Let's keep those incidents confined to Assembly only. So there will be no permission for live telecast, but journalists can do deferred telecast," he said.
This is first time in the history of J&K Assembly that gag order has been issued, and barring television journalists from telecasting the proceedings live is being seen as nervousness of the coalition regime in wake of the unending controversy over the beef ban.
The opposition parties are all set to corner the Government over the issue, and disallowing live telecast of the proceedings could add fuel to the fire.
TV scribes who have been asked not to telecast the live proceedings of the House view it as a bizarre diktat. They say what they could not telecast live will be a deferred telecast without any cuts and additions. "How could the ban on live telecast stop us from covering the proceedings? If there is a ruckus or muscle flexing, we can have a deferred telecast of the incidents, if not the live one," a correspondent of a New Delhi-based TV channel told Early Times.
"Stopping live coverage would not hide things within the Assembly and the deferred telecast of the proceedings would be as good as the live one if done without editing," said another scribe.
Sources in the coalition said both the BJP and the PDP are expecting a stern opposition from National Conference, Congress and others.
"Of course, this session would be more chaotic than the ones witnessed in the past," admitted a legislator from the ruling camp.
