Why BJP is opposed to change of guard in J&K?
11/16/2015 10:52:54 PM
Why the BJP leadership in the State
and at the Centre is opposed to
any change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir? This question has surfaced soon after Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, had dropped a hint on handing over the reins of the Government to his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti. There does not seem any plausible political reason for the BJP to oppose the change of guard. The only reason that could have prompted the leadership of the state unit of the BJP to opt for continuance of the Mufti as Chief Minister seems to be the wide difference between the temperament of Mufti Mohd.Sayeed and his daughter. The leaders of the state unit of the BJP have already experienced and witnessed the style of functioning of Mehbooba and that of the Mufti.Well though the BJP leaders had nothing to do with the style of functioning of Mehbooba who is simply President of the PDP and not even a member of the cabinet headed by her father. This way the BJP leaders, including the MLAs and the ministers had no direct dealing with Mehbooba. Majority of BJP leaders believe that Mufti Mohd. Sayeed is known for his patience, and sobriety. Whenever he found that some of his ministerial colleagues, including those from the BJP, had committed some error he would make the minister rectify the mistake but with a cool head. Possibly the BJP leaders feel scared of Mehbooba who is a hard task master and is in the habit of voicing anger over trifles, a quality that is not with Mufti Sayeed.
Well the BJP leadership does not find any truth behind reports on change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir being round the corner .There is no truth in the reports that change of guard is on cards in Jammu and Kashmir. Coalition Government is running smoothly. This is the final statement from the BJP's chief whip in Raj Sabha Avinash Rai Khanna. He said neither the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed nor the BJP high command has communicated anything in this regard. No such meeting or communication has taken place between Mufti and the BJP high command, according to Khanna who has asked people not to believe in such reports. He said the BJP-PDP coalition Government will complete its full term of six years. "As of now, BJP high command has no plans to change the guard in the State," he said. The BJP leader said CM Mufti is also not handing over the baton to his daughter Mehbooba.Mufti had earlier hinted at handing over power to his 56-year-old daughter.
Despite the fact that the decision on changing the guard in Jammu and Kashmir has to be taken by the PDP and the BJP leadership because the State has a coalition Government but it is not mandatory for the PDP to seek approval from the BJP. Yes, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed can simply inform the BJP about his plan to handover the baton to his daughter on the ground that his (Mufti's) weak health does not allow him to work hard and tour various areas of the State. He does believe that at this critical juncture the troubled State of Jammu and Kashmir needs a dynamic Chief Minister who has the stamina and political vision and wisdom to run the affairs of the Government. Not as a father but as a senior political leaders Mufti Sayeed has seen the spark of dynamism, political vision and wisdom in Mehbooba and hence he wants to handover the Chief Minister's chair to her.The BJP leadership should know that as President of the PDP and as Chief Minister, Mehbooba has to perform a role that is different from the party chief and from the head of the Government. Several BJP Ministers believe that Mehbooba could keep them on the toes which possibly the BJP leaders do not want. It is time if the BJP is shaken out of its slumber and force its Ministers and Legislators to work for the welfare of people of the State. If the BJP Ministers shun sloth and help the PDP in implementing various development schemes the BJP may regain the political luster it had lost because of the poor performance of party ministers during the last over eight months. The BJP has experimented with Mufti Sayeed and let it get ready to experiment with Mehbooba who is expected to tame her temper once she is installed as Chief Minister.
