SRINAGAR, Nov 16: Taking pot-shots at the development package announced recently by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) today threatened of carrying a mass movement against the 'meagre' flood relief amount as announced in the package.
Addressing a press conference here, KEA Chairman Mohammad Yasin Khan said that for the past 14 months the flood affected people were waiting for a respectable package from the Government of India. He said the flood hit people feel 'ditched' by Prime Minister as just peanuts were announced for them in the name of relief.
"It seems that a deep rooted conspiracy has been hatched to cause economic losses to the people of Kashmir. In the name of compensation the central government has added insult to the injury to the people whose houses or businesses got vanished due to the September 2014 flood. This is sheer discrimination and we will not sit idle in response to it," said Yasin. The KEA Chairman said that they would visit the various colleges and universities and sensitize the youth about the 'paltry' amount dished out by the people at helm as package for the flood hit people. He said the youth would also be made aware about the fact that handful of amount has been kept in the package for development of Kashmir valley.
"In the name of development mere Rs. 6, 500 crores have been given to Kashmir province whereas Rs. 13,000 crores have been given to Ladakh and Rs. 11,000 crores to Jammu province. There is no mention of any package for the other regions like the Chenab valley, Poonch and Rajouri. As such we are constrained to say that Kashmir and some other regions have been discriminated in the name of development," said Yasin.
The KEA Chairman said that New Delhi should re-design the package failing which the traders as well as other common people would be forced to come on streets and raise strong protests. He said the Alliance would write to Government of India and impress upon the people at helm there to revise the package meant for the flood hit people of Kashmir.
"The government seems to be hell bent to keep the Kashmiri people suppressed in the post flood scenario. It is due to this reason only that just Rs. 800 crores has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of traders affected by the flood. Truth of matter is that Kashmir economy got destroyed due to the flood and suffered losses to the tune of Rs. 1, 00,000 crores. More than 50,000 shops were damaged due to the flood, but still then there is nobody who would come to the rescue of these affected people," said Yasin.
The KEA Chairman alleged an amount of Rs. 25,000 crores has not been clubbed under any head or component in the development package. He said the picture is not clear with respect to this amount and it is known where the amount would be spent. He added that people of Kashmir have been 'deceived' in the name of development.
